Overlooking historic St Andrews golf course and Fife's beautiful coastal scenery, RAF Leuchars Airshow, Scotland's largest, provides a perfect setting for a spectacular seven-hour flying display. Pride of place goes to the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Expect to see the likes of the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and Dakota - especially poignant as 2010 marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, while the derring-do of the parachute display teams and the likes of The Red Arrows are always popular with the crowds.

Each year aircraft from both Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm are also joined by aircraft from foreign air forces.

Now a fighter base operating Tornado F3s of 43 squadron and 111 squadron (by 2008 to be replaced by Eurofighter Typhoons), RAF Leuchars was opened in 1908 as an RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service).

In 1938, and for the duration of the Second World War, Leuchars came under RAF Coastal Command, while in 1950 transfered to Fighter Command, with Search and Rescue facility added in 1954.

Leuchars is currently a QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) station and a Military Emergency Diversion Aerodrome as well as host of the annual RAF Leuchars Airshow.

Directions

Just 6.5 km (4 miles) north of St Andrews and 11km (7 miles) south of Dundee, on the coast overlooking Eden Mouth and St Andrews Bay.
By Road: off the A919 heading north to the Tay Bridge.
For those coming from the M90, from the north at junction 9 take the A913 and pick up the A91 just west of Cupar.
From Edinburgh and the south take the A92 at Junction 2A, which intersects with the A91.
By Train: Scotrail services Leuchars (for St Andrews) - which is just 2km (1 mile) from the airfield.
