Grantown-on-Spey Highland Games takes place in late August on the town's Heathfield Park. It's the ideal place to see a bit of local culture, be it the "heavy" sporting events or the more artistic delights of Scottish dancing and bagpiping.
The one-day event showcases all the traditional Highland Games, harking back to the warrior clan days. The popular "heavy" events - the shot putt, hammer throwing and caber tossing - feature enormous men in tartan sweating profusely as they hurl large objects as far as they can. Special to Grantown-on-Spey is the 56lb Weight for Distance Championship, while for teams there is the open tug-of-war competition.
