Norwich Cathedral, with its towering spire and extensive cloisters, provides one of the most splendid landmarks in the region. This vast building is best viewed from inside where its height is accentuated by the slender Romanesque arcading and elegant Lierne ceiling vaulting.
Construction of the Cathedral was started in 1091 by Bishop Herbert de Losinga, to be part of a traditional Benedictine monastery. The building was made from flint rubble and mortar, faced with limestone ashlar, imported from Caen in France and from Barnack in Northamptonshire, much of it transported by boat up the river Wensum.

High up in the ceiling is a collection of roof boss with beautifully carved and colourfully painted medieval roof sculptures depicting Bible stories and this collection is unrivalled anywhere in the world.

Other unique treasures within the cathedral include the Bishop's Throne, made up of 20th-century wood set against fragments of stone that appear to pre-date the cathedral itself. The beautiful St Luke's Chapel dates from the 1380s and its painted oak screen depicting the life of Christ is an extraordinary work of art.

Norwich comes second only to Salisbury Cathedral when it comes to the size of its cloisters. These date from the 13th-15th century and can be explored alone or with the help of a guide. Continue your stroll beyond the holy buildings and cloisters to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Cathedral Close as it stretches down to the river, a haven in this busy city.

At least three services are held in the Cathedral every day, often sung by the choir which is made up of boys from King Edward School situated within the Cathedral Close. Concerts, lectures and exhibitions also frequently take place here. Visitors can also enjoy the Refectory Restaurant and the Cathedral shop.
